There are many looking at the demonstrations against systemic racism happening across America and wondering “what can I do?” While giving money, reading a book, watching a film, or simply grabbing a coronavirus mask and joining in may seem like obvious answers, not everyone is that intuitive.
The “influencersinthewild” Twitter account is doing the hard work of looking directly into the hellmouth of tone-deaf self-promotion during this week of social uprising. What they’ve found may inspire you to throw your phone across the room.
Perhaps most egregious is the short video of elegantly-dressed women behaving as though the brutal death of an unarmed Black man has sparked “Coachella pt 17.”
Bear witness to how the influencer sausage is made with this video, which goes behind-the-scenes of a “mid-jump” moment. Amusing on a normal day, but perhaps a smidge ghoulish as others protest disproportionate state violence against minorities.
There are others (plus many from earlier times that are merely awkward) but if we share any more we may cringe ourselves to death.
